Harvest Recommendations
Count the days from when the plants or seeds were planted. Plan on the number of days listed on seed packet for chosen variety depending on growing conditions of soil, water, light, and temperature.
Harvest muskmelons and Persian melons when the stem begins to crack away from the fruit. Lift fruit and if it separates easily from the vine it is ready.
Crenshaws turn mostly yellow, but will still have some green in the rind when they ripen. Honedew and casaba are ready when the rinds turn yellow.
In all cases, smell the blossom end. When it smells fruity, the melon is ripe.
Storage and Preservation Methods
Can be stored fresh for a short time in a cool location. Rinds may be pickled or stored as preserves.
