Planting Instructions
Pea vines vary widely in height. Dwarf varieties may be planted in double rows spaced to help support one another. Taller varieties should be trellised.
Rows: plant seeds 2 inches apart in double rows 3 to 6 inches apart. Some tall varieties do better when trellised.
Wide rows: dwarf varieties are well suited to wide row planting as the growing plants provide support for one another. Plant peas with equal spacing of 6" by 6".
Containers: allow 6" in each direction for pea plants and trellis them if needed for support.
Plant peas in cool weather about 5 weeks before the date of last frost, since hot weather stops them from bearing. Peas are also adapted to late summer planting for a fall harvest.
Some gardeners have success planting peas in late fall so the seeds will germinate when the weather warms in the spring. Yields may be reduced as some seed will rot in the soil.
Fruit and vines can tolerate a light frost. Peas are a cool climate crop with optimum growing temperatures between 55-65°F.
