Touring Bali

By: James S

Bali, one of the most beautiful places in the world, holds an unparalleled mystique for any lover of the south pacific. Filled with incredible scenery and colorful culture, a visit to Bali is an experience you will never forget. Especially if you pick up a souvenir or two, and snap some good photos.

Many people like to take guided tours of Bali. The locals know better than anyone where the best spots for travel are located, and they know how popular these areas have been with foreign tourists. Here are some things you might want to make sure your guided tour in Bali offers.

The Ubud Monkey Park

If you are a fan of monkeys and other wildlife, then the monkey park is for you. You can buy small fruits such as bananas right at the entrance, to feed to the monkeys, or just wander around watching them. Remember though, that although they might seem quite human at times they are still just monkeys, and you need to be careful. Nevertheless, the scenery is gorgeous, and the habitats are excellently done.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu

Officially called the Pura Luhur Uluwatu, this is quite possibly the most spectacular temple in Bali. Originally, it was built to defend the city form evil spirits coming from the south west, and is highly important in local rituals as well as being revered throughout the island. Built in the 1100s, it is situated on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Bukit peninsula, and is flanked by some beautiful seventeenth century temples.

Batur Volcano

One of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, it is a must-see for any visitor to Bali. One of the largest volcanoes, the caldera alone is more then 10 kilometers wide, and about 450 meters deep. Said to be the throne of the goddess Danu, it has a place in many of the islands legends.

Barong Dance

The Barong dance is generally used to mean a dance where animals are represented by masks of the dancers, so for example in the Barong Macan dance a tiger mask is used (Macan means Tiger). In fact, the original meaning of the word Barong was a character in Balinese mythology. He is the king of spirits, and leader of the hosts of good. Although represented in different regions by different animals, the most common representation is of him as a lion, representing strength.

No doubt you will probably find your own favorite place to go in Bali, but remember that there are lots of people out there who have jobs taking advantage of tourists! Be careful and be informed before you go and you will have no nasty surprises. Turn down free merchandise and services--they will expect something in return.
