Make Gardening time family time
This past week, as I spent time on my hands and knees pulling weeds and turning over soil, I decided to invite out my 4 year old son to join me. I figured I could use the company and was interested to see if I could get him to pull a few weeds. What I didn’t anticipate was a quality bonding experience and a time for teaching. Of course I had to take the time to explain what was a weed and what was a plant, but I also had the chance to show off some pretty cool earthworms and other creepy crawlies from the soil. I couldn’t get him to hold the worm, but he certainly hovered over it for some time observing it twist and turn and try to burrow back down into the soil.
Gardening has become a passion of mine, because of the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment it brings to me personally. At the same time, it can be a great opportunity to teach our children the value of work, to understand that the food we enjoy comes at a cost - but most of all, it is a great opportunity to just spend time together and talk. I’m guessing that as he grows older the conversation will be more than just about earthworms and dirt and more about life and its challenges.
Gardening isn’t just about growing fruits and vegetables.
