Planting Tomatoes

Tomatoes should be planted in your garden plot as seedlings, not as seeds. Several weeks ago I wrote an article about how to grow your own tomato seedlings.  If you are looking to get tomatoes in the ground this year, and you are not growing your own seedlings, it is time to head on down to the local nursery to pick up some tomato seedlings.

When planting your seedlings, you’ll want to plant them deep enough to bury the lower leaves of the plant, while leaving the top three or four leaves out of the ground. Make sure to spread out your plants so that there is an average of 2 feet between each plant.

Your newly transplanted seedlings will require deep and frequent watering over the next several weeks – once they have established themselves in the soil, you should make sure your tomato plants are getting at least 1 inch of water per week.

As the plants start to mature over the next several weeks, I’ll add a cage around each plant to give them support as they grow and bear nice, big, red tomatoes through out the late summer.
