Time for fresh garden salads
The best thing about a garden is the fresh vegetables that produce throughout the summer. Already, I am seeing fresh lettuce, radishes, and carrots that are ready for use. Fresh garden tomatoes are the cornerstone of my favorite kind of salad – but my tomatoes probably won’t be ready until August.
Lettuce can be harvested at any time when the leaf reaches the size you want. To keep your lettuce producing over the next month, clip the young tender leaves off at about ground level. You may want to harvest every other plant to give some space to your plants to continue to grow. Lettuce should be washed thoroughly and allowed to drip dry before being placed in the refridgerator. I like to place a paper towel in zip lock container to soak up any excess moisture to help extend the life of my lettuce.
