Watering Your Watermelon
Wherever you live, it is probably hot…..really hot. And with all this hot weather, it is important to pay close attention to your garden.
Watermelon is called watermelon for a reason – they need plenty of water. If watermelon plants experience stress from intense heat and dry soil, they probably won’t set fruit. During the really hot summer stretches, pay close attention to the soil to ensure that it maintains some level of moisture below the surface. The soil should be moist to about two inches deep.
Over-watering can also cause your watermelon undue stress. Excess amounts of water can “drown” the plant by preventing it from getting enough oxygen. Sufficient oxygen is necessary for proper plant growth and fruit development. Water regularly and deeply without causing muddy soil or standing water.
