Grow Your Own Spinach
If you are like me, you will probably not be buying spinach from the store for a while. In fact, I am already planning on carving out space in my garden next spring for growing my own spinach.
Spinach should be planted in cool weather. Next spring, I’ll be watching the weather forecasts closely as spinach should be planted about two weeks before the expected date of the last frost. The seeds should be scattered thinly on the soil surface and should be covered with a 1/2″ layer of soil, sand or soft potting mixture.
As the young plants begin to grow and reach an inch or two tall, they should be thinned out - crowded plants develop a strong flavor. Once your spinach reaches an acceptable size for eating you’ll want to begin harvesting. Be sure to not let your spinach go too far into the summer as spinach tends to go to seed in temperatures over 90 F.
