Apply Organic Mulch in the Fall

Now that the growing season is pretty much behind us, it is time to start thinking about preparing your plot for next year. Every fall I like to cover the soil with an organic mulch. Organic mulches include materials like bark, shredded leaves, grass clippings, composed products, pine needles, and shredded newspaper.
My fall mulching habit has developed for several reasons – for one, through out the winter months in some areas of the United States weeds do continue to grow. Having a good mulch to cover the soil with will prevent the slow weed growth during the winter, but the mulch will also slowly decompose throughout the winter to replenish the soil with nutrients it will need again in the spring.
