Growing Garlic

Planting season is quickly approaching for those who live in the southern hemisphere.  As I have watched visitors come to this website, I have seen an increased interest in planting and growing garlic.

Garlic is generally not grown from seed, but from cloves. Garlic bulbs can be purchased from your local nursery, or you can simply use the garlic bulbs available from the grocery store produce department.

Garlic prefers rich, loose, well-drained soil. It requires adequate nutrients, so mix the fertilizer into the soil prior to planting. Garlic should be grown in full sunlight in raised beds and weeded regularly. As they begin to grow, be aware that their shallow root systems are easily damaged by cultivation, so mulch them freely to assist in controlling weeds.
