Growing BIG Pumpkins
Growing big, round pumpkins starts with getting the seeds planted right. When growing pumpkin seeds, you will want to start your seedlings indoors.
To plant pumpkin seeds, place one or two seeds in a small amount of potting soil about three weeks prior to the date of the last frost. Place each contain near a window where it can receive plenty of sunlight. Once the seedlings begin to sprout (good seeds will germinate in 70 - 80 degree conditions after only 4 or 5 days) you’ll want to prepare them to be planted outdoors. This process is called “hardening off” the seedling. To “harden off” your seedlings, place your pots outdoors after the date of the last frost, but bring them inside if you think temperatures will drop to near freezing at night.
Once the plants begin to grow, you’ll want to cut off all but two branches to encourage the nutrients to flow into only a few pumpkins on the vines – this will make them grow BIG!
