« Growing BIG Pumpkins It’s Never too Early to Start Planning »

Let’s Talk Lima Beans

Many of our site visitors have come to the site looking for information on growing lima beans. I am guessing that our Southern hemisphere friends or our greenhouse buddies are the only ones planting beans this time of year.

When choosing lima bean seeds to plant, look for pest free varieties that have been treated for fungi, bacteria, insects and other seed born pathogens. These types of seeds will have the best chance of producing a good crop. Lima Bean seeds are viable for about 3 years and should be planted in soil no cooler than 65 degrees F. The seeds will germinate once the soil reaches about 75 degrees F.

Lima Bean seeds should be planted about 1 to 1.5 inches deep in the soil. Space each seed about 3 to 6 inches apart to allow for adequate growing room. Each row of beans should be about 24 inches apart.
