What You are Getting from your Grocer
I mentioned in my last post that producers of commercial fruits and vegetables are focused on tasty profits, not flavor. As I have thought more on this topic, a few more things come to mind.
What commercial farmers sell to grocers must produce a maximum yield, harvest easily, ship and store well and look really good on the shelf – does any of that make you think that flavor and nutritional value might get sacrificed along the way? Truth be told, the best tasting, most nutritious varieties of fruits and vegetables generally don’t meet all of these criteria.
Best tasting fruits and vegetables generally aren’t at the top of their class when it comes to maximum yield, but earn “straight A’s” at the dinner table. Tomatoes are a great example – in all my years, I have never eaten a store bought tomato that even comes close to the vine-ripened quality of tomato that was grown in my own backyard.
