The Best Quality Comes From Your Backyard
I cannot seem to get off of this subject. I have more reasons (more than you care to count) about why you should grow your own garden. This week it’s all about freshness and quality.
It’s a well known fact that most supermarket fruits and vegetables are picked green and allowed to ripen in cold storage. Backyard gardening allows you to pick your produce at its peak and eat it before the natural flavor begins to change. For example, when corn is picked, it only takes a few hours for the natural sugars to turn to starch - completely changing the flavor of the corn. Almost all garden variety fruits and vegetables experience this flavor change.
So pick your veggies, wash ‘em quick and eat ‘em right away. Oh, and run your corn from the garden to the boiling pot of water - RUN!
