The Right Type of Soil
Great soil gives you the best chance to succeed as a gardener. Now that the planting season is upon us, it’s a good time to consider the quality of your soil.
Soil is characterized by the size of the particles that make up the soil and is generally referred to as either sand, silt or clay. Loam is a combination of these soil types and is the most desirable for growing a garden. The right type of soil will give plants what they need most - water, air and mineral nutrients. Plants generally get their nutrients from decomposing organic materials or fertilizer. Good soil will hold these nutrients and make them available to the plant as they are needed.
Over the next few weeks I’ll go into more detail about the different types of soil - sand, silt, and clay and how each soil type influences plant development. Stay tuned….
