Here comes the harvest!

The days are slowly getting shorter, the mornings a touch more crisp, which means the harvest will soon be upon us. This week I enjoyed my first couple of tomatoes on some home grilled hamburgers.
This growing season we decided not to use tomato racks to hold up our plants. Every year it seems like the racks are working great until they hit supergrowth, grow the rack right out of the ground and fall over. It seemed like a better idea to just not use the racks, but I’m regretting that decision now - I have tomato plants sprawling all over the garden and out into the lawn.
Two things I’ve definitely enjoyed this year that are a must for next year are the black plastic mulch we put down over the soil and the drip system that lies beneath the plastic. Watering is easy as pie and not a weed in sight! The mulch keeps down weeds and helps preserve moisture in the soil, producing large and healthy plants.
