IT’S TIME TO PLANT SPUDS AND PEAS
Wednesday, April 8th, 2009
March was a tough weather month for most of the country. April seems to be giving us some more spring-like days. You need to be getting your potatoes and peas in the ground.
If you wait to plant peas too late in the spring, weevils may show up eating the pods. However, soil needs to be above 41 degrees to germinate. It’s warm enough now to get started.
Potatoes can tolerate cold soil better. Plant them in trenches six inches deep. Line the trenches with peat moss to acidify the soil. The soil should be moist and slightly acidic to avoid the possiblility of scab. Space them 12 to 15 inches apart.
When cutting your seed potatoes leave a generous amount of potato flesh with the eye. Top you seed potatoes with about two inches of soil. When they begin growing scoop soil from between the rows to cover developing tubers. Good luck with those plants and enjoy some “new” potatoes and peas for dinner!
