TOMATOES: AN AMERICAN FAVORITE
It was reported that in one year each American ate 20 pounds of fresh tomatoes and three times that much that was processed into pizza, pasta sauce, ketchup, salsa and other tomato products that are packaged in cans and bottles. Tomatoes are truly an American favorite.
You can have fresh tomatoes regardless of where you live. Our son and daughter-in-law grow tomato plants in pots on their apartment patio. We grow them on our acre. You can even grow them hanging upside down in containers now.
The best spot regardless of how you grow the plants is where it will get at least eight hours of sun per day. Keep the plants at least three feet apart.
The best soil is one that is well drained and includes plenty of organic matter such as compost or shredded leaves. Consistent soil moisture is key. Don’t let them get too wet or too dry. Inconsistent watering produces poor fruit. The plants should have at least one inch of water per week.
Try growing your own and enjoy the better flavor of fresh tomatoes. You will be happy with the results of using those fresh tomatoes in your cooking as well.
