A SUMMER FAVORITE: RASPBERRIES

Monday, July 6th, 2009

One of our favorite things to do in our garden is to watch our three year old granddaughter go through our raspberry patch picking and eating raspberries.  Usually she has as much on her front as she has in her mouth!

Here are a few tips on harvesting a generous crop in your garden.  Most raspeberry plants do best in full sunlight.  The fruit will tolerate some slight shade.  Well-drained soil is essential.  These plants need a plentiful supply of moisture throughout the growing season.  Use plenty of garden compost during the off season especially if the soil is particularly acidic.

When planting be sure the roots are covered by no more than three inches of soil.  Don’t plant any deeper.  The best time to plant is in the autumn months.

Pruning should be done in the early spring.  Cut the canes to about 10 inches above the soil level.  You want the top growth to be sufficient to keep the roots active.  Clear out all the dead canes while pruning the live ones.

Your family (no matter the age) will love having fresh raspberries for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!
