The Top 10 Pest Control Tips For Vegetable Gardeners

There’s nothing more annoying than finding that the birds have pecked your prize-winning fruit to pieces or that your cabbages are being munched by an army of caterpillars! Make sure it’s just you that gets to eat your fruit & vegetables with our top 10 pest control tips…

1. Protect your fruit trees with a Fruit Cage.
Fruit Cages are available a wide variety of shapes and sizes, which can be dismantled and easily stored. They can be used in conjunction with anti-bird or butterfly netting.

2. Keep those butterflies off your cabbages.
Butterfly netting will help keep your cabbage plants caterpillar free without using any nasty chemicals. Just make sure you peg it down around the sides to keep them out and stop it blowing away!

3. Stop rabbits in their tracks.
Galvanised rabbit wire netting can be used on its own or as an addition to a fruit or vegetable cage. Make sure that you fold the bottom 15cm outwards and bury it to stop them digging under and keep any grass or nearby shrubs cut back, as they like to work under cover!

4. Keep insects away.
Protect your vulnerable vegetables from attack by covering them with insect mesh netting. It allows water in and keeps the temperature up, creating a microclimate perfect for vegetable growing!

5. Keep things neat and tidy.
Slugs and snails love to hide away in weeds and long grass so keep them under control with Weed Control Fabric. Especially useful around fruit bushes which hate having their roots disturbed by weeding.

6. Trap slugs and snails.
Slugs and snails are the gardener’s worst enemy and if you don’t want to use slug pellets then a slug trap is perfect. Using beer as bait, a slug trap is environmentally friendly and highly effective.

7. Secure your water butt.
Make sure your water butt has a tightly fitting lid to stop insects getting in to lay their eggs. You can also add a few drops of vegetable oil to the water to stop insects from landing.

8. Get plants started early.
Your plants will be able to resist pests much better if they get a good start so protect them against cold weather with Garden Fleece.

9. Protect tender plants with a bell cloche.
Keep your seedling plants protected from birds and other pests with a bell cloche. It will also keep them protected from the frost so you can get started early – you can even use them for warming the ground before sowing seeds!

10. Encourage useful predators.
Avoid killing useful insects and birds by stopping using chemical pesticides and slug pellets. Chickens love to eat slugs and snails and if you’re thinking of getting some, Fruit Cages can be easily converted to house them!
