How To Grow Grapes For Your Garden
Grapes are really great fruit; they are loaded with helpful antioxidants and nutrients, easy to pack and drag around with you, and take next to no effort eating. First things first, the grapes you want to grow. Everyone loves a tasty Thompson Seedless, but if you’re located in a cooler climate it might be harder to grow these babies as compared to, say, the Concord grape. Select the best type for your location and try to work with that one so you don’t end up getting frustrated when your grapevines don’t bear fruit.
As a general rule, grapes that grow well in the cooler climates tend to be slipskin grapes or occasionally a good wine grape. Grapes the grow well in the warmer climates are more wine grapes and table grapes. You really need to decide exactly what type of grapes you want to go after before starting otherwise you could end up throwing your entire garden off course.
After you’ve selected an appropriate berry, clear a space around your yard and get ready to play in the dirt! That’s right, grapes need soft, loamy soil to grow properly, so mess around in the dirt and do some work getting the soil like this.
You don’t need a ton of soil, but make sure you get a good amount just the way you want it. You might also want to set up your spot somewhere near a fence or post, unless you plan on later putting up a trellis for your grapevines. They can grow really unwily fast, though, so keep an eye on them while you’re gardening and make sure you don’t slip up with location!
After you finish dirt dobbing, you’re ready to plant! Place your grape seed or vine in the soil. Make sure the area has plenty of sun as well, and can also get water naturally if you don’t like to water too often. Once planted grapes do a lot of the growing themselves!
I mentioned above having a place for a trellis, well now is where you’d use it. After they start growing, make sure you wrap your grapevines towards the sunlight and raise them a bit higher so you can make sure they reach teh light. And so you can see your precious fruit glint in the sun!
Make sure you visit your vine every few months for pruning and upkeep. After you get enough vine you may also want to loop it around a trellis, arbor, or fence.
