Strawberry Varieties For Container Gardening
If you have little or no place for a garden, planting in containers can be a satisfying way to grow a small harvest of vegetables or a fruit like strawberries. As you start your container gardening and the plants begin to grow, they can also add to the relaxing atmosphere of your porch, patio or another area that you have chosen for the location of your gardening containers.
To have success growing strawberries in some sort of pot or container, choose a strawberry plant variety that produces fewer runners. An everbearing variety is a good choice for this. June bearing varieties produce more runners but if you have a favorite June bearing variety that you have your heart set on using with container gardening, you can make it work if you keep up with clipping off the excess runners as the plants grow.
Some favorite everbearing varieties are Ozark Beauty and Fort Laramie. Also, Eversweet Everbearing strawberries work well for areas with Summer temperatures over 100 degrees, as this variety tolerates these high temperatures without any loss of quality in the fruit.
Some June bearing varieties are Earliglow, Honeoye, Jewel and Sparkle.
When you are deciding what variety of strawberry to plant, your local Cooperative Extension service can give you tips and advice on the strawberry varieties that grow best in your local area. This can help you make an informed decision that can help with your success.
The best choice for a container is one that has some holes in the bottom to allow any excess water to drain out, in case of over-watering. If you put some small stones in the bottom of the container before adding the potting soil, that bottom layer of stones will help with drainage. A word of caution; if you plan to be moving the container around now and then, you won’t want to add too many stones or the container will become too heavy to lift or carry.
When you’re thinking about pros and cons, another pro for growing strawberries in a container is that you have a little longer in the growing season to get them started; you would have needed to plant them sooner if growing strawberries in the ground in a traditional garden setting. Also, containers are portable so you can bring them under cover to protect the plants, when there is any danger of frost.
You don’t want to over-water but letting the soil in a container get too dry can be a problem with container gardening also. That’s where grow boxes can be a wonderful solution to a successful crop of delicious strawberries. Grow boxes are designed to keep the soil at just the right amount of moisture. The water feeds up through the soil from the bottom of the container and up through to the roots of the plants. All you have to do is be sure to keep the water tray filled at the bottom of the container and the grow box system will take care of keeping the soil at the best stage of moisture for the successful growth of the plants and berries.
