What Is Square Foot Gardening
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010
What’s square foot gardening? You might have heard the time period while you had been browsing the internet about starting a compact backyard in small spaces. Or someone might have talked about their own sq. foot garden and how simple it is to look after, to not mention the large harvests it produces in such small spaces.
Now, doesn’t that every one sound so good?
It did to me once I came across it.
I had never heard of it previous to stumbling throughout it while I was researching raised beds. It’s kinda funny how I found it really, but that is another story, er not.
But, in any case, back on topic.
What Is It?
Square foot gardening is just gardening by the square foot in small areas.
Just one 4′ x four’ space will produce enough produce to feed one particular person one meal each single day of the growing season. Isn’t that tremendous?
And 3 or four of these boxes will provide plenty of meals for a family of four! Consider the financial savings in groceries!
Mel, the author of the e-book, Sq. Food Gardening, recommends raised beds to virtually get rid of weed infestations and his own potting combine (1/three peat, 1/three coarse vermiculite, 1/3 compost) assured to prevent overwatering. With his combine, you CANNOT overwater regardless of how hard you try. Critical! Others have tried and failed!
After setting up your plot to your garden, you then take either string or tape or pieces of wood to divide the world into one foot squares. These are your planting areas.
For example, you can plant nine green onions in a single sq. foot. Each plant has its personal spacing requirements in its personal field according to Mel. In his e-book, he details the necessities of different plants. You would be shocked how a lot you may fit into a four’ x 4′.
I only have a three’ x 3′ and I’ve already planted green onions, mesclun, eight ball squash, bok choy, and marigolds. And I still have 4 squares left to plant!
It’s Natural!
When you use all natural substances to feed and care for your backyard, then you may be rewarded with organic produce from your personal garden.
After all, food grown in compost shall be loaded with good nutrition. Properly, relying on the standard of the compost. However say you might be composting yourself, then if you put in a superb selection into your pile, then all those goodies will end up feeding your garden which is able to end up feeding you with organic goodness!
Simply fascinated with the tastiness is starting to make my mouth water.
It is actually not that hard.
I found it very easy to setup. And with mine being a raised garden, it’s a lot simpler to plant as I’m not stooping and bending over as much. And that’s one other constructive about this method. There’s not as much shoveling or heavy work. It’s pretty much plant, water, harvest. Just beautiful!
